This rough ridge sprawls from the base of Skalogth, the Black Mountain, to Griffin’s Eyrie, on the edge of the Golden Lands. Ancient Kalavalan legend has it that Chernovokh, the incarnation of Death, drew his scythe across the world here, drawing forth the earth’s fiery blood and leaving behind the Pohjola Hills as a scar on the face of Ma’a. From that scar spring forth orcs and all manner of foul beasts to plague the mortal world. Most famously, a thousand years ago the arch-lich Vecna built his sorcerous kingdom here, and was only turned back by the famed Heroes of the Hammer, the founders of Urlaen. His disciple Sarakh followed him, building the demonic city of Sarakh’Tir and plunging the world into war from 196 to 199 A.C. Even after the Sarakhan Empire was brought low, many wizards and warlocks continued to make their homes in these hills, though none succeeded in creating the empire of their masters, Heaven be praised.
Today the Pohjola Hills are a wilderness of daunting terrain covered in coniferous woods, dotted with wizards’ towers and glacier-carved lakes. The eastern reaches of the hills are frequently explored by adventurers, some of whom bring forth artifacts and lore better left alone, while others carry gold and silver to the Umbrian city-states.
